Like the previous games, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is described as a side-scroller and a metroidvania game and can only be played in Single-Player. The game follows the story of a priestess named Kaho, who is travelling from Lun to the Kingdom of Karst to gain an audience with the queen in hopes of finding a cure to the corruption of the land, including that of her village Kaho explores a variety of areas along the way, where the player can collect items and fight monsters. All areas in the game end in boss fights. The player can use both melee and ranged attacks as well as items collected along the way.

The game has received very favorable reviews and was the one of the first games in the series to get a Steam release and, because of this, it also includes achievements, among those being 'Pacifist', where one has to finish the game without killing any common enemy, and 'True Ending', received for getting to the True Ending of the game.
